GROCOCK Jim

Jim was one of two butchers in Gnowangerup during the 1930’s.
He had set up a ‘horse works’ behind the shop.
This was a device in which a horse was harnessed to a pole and walked in circles around a gearbox, which in turn revolved a below- ground shaft, thus operating a sausage mincing machine inside the shop.
As pieces of fatty meat could be slippery on the floor, each day the entire floor was replaced and covered with sawdust which was raked throughout the day for the sake of appearance.
Butchers served customers throuph fly wire screens to reduce any contamination of the meat which was hanging on hooks.

Sometimes butchers were asked for “a penny’ worth” of dogs meat and don’t drop it in the sawdust
Reason: Dad eats it and the sawdust gets stuck in his teeth.
Mr Grocock had three sons Jim, Felix and Horace.
Their slaughter yard was adjacent to the Showgrounds (?); and opposite Spring Vale Farm, (owned by the McDonald Family).
Louisa died as the result of a car accident in 1935.
